History

Bowsprit Cottage has been the vacation home to three generations of the Scherer / Madsen families.  The original cottage consisting of the current kitchen and dining room, and about half of the living room was built 2 weeks at a time by our family itself in the early 1960s.  We hammered every nail and hoisted every rafter into place. There were only a handful of houses down here at that time. The back of the cottage was added and all was winterized in 1976.  The final renovation was the enclosure of a former deck that added the south half of the living room.  Bowsprit has stood strong and safe on these rocks through many storms including the 100-year storm of 1978.  Beginning in 2004 we decided to rent Bowsprit for others to also enjoy this amazing place.

Indian Point is a special location and a gracious summer community.   The developer, whose many grandchildren still live down here, had the vision to set aside the rocks, beaches, central woods, and access paths for all residents to enjoy.   Indian Point has long been the summer retreat for professors and artists, doctors and writers, engineers and newspapermen, even the last governor of Maine.

Telephone

Your phone number here is (207) 371-2720.  Local calls (Georgetown, Bath, Brunswick) are free, but a calling card or prepaid card is required for outgoing long distance calls.

Guest Card

You must display a guest card visible through the windshield of your car at any of the parking areas or the boat launch.  Please remember to leave the card for the next guest!

Water Conservation

As on any island, fresh water is precious and septic systems are overworked.  All of us at Indian Point are trying to conserve the fresh water.  Please help.

Fire

The biggest threat to an island is not a storm from the sea, but fire.

Roads

As you will quickly find out, our narrow roads down here are also our walkways.

Other Hazards

Privacy and Tranquility

There has been a long tradition at Indian Point of being a quiet and peaceful place where  each neighbor’s privacy is carefully protected.

Indian Point Association Regulations

The association has rules and guidelines to protect guests and owners as well as the safety and tranquility of the environment and greater community. Please take the time to review them.  Please familiarize yourself with the map that identifies paths, beaches, public parking, etc.  Complaints made to the directors about guests or owners are taken seriously.

Once again, welcome to Bowsprit Cottage!  We hope that you will enjoy your week here and find the same beauty, serenity, and just plain good fun that we have savored here for four decades.
